For 12 years the murder of Rashawn Brazell went unsolved until  Kwauhuru Govan was charged in February 2017.

At the time, Govan was already in custody in New York City for the 2004 murder of 17 year-old Sharabia Thomas.  Her case remained unsolved for years until cold-case detectives were able to match DNA found under her fingernails to Govan.

According to both the New York Daily News and PIX11 News, authorities are eyeing Govan in relation to other unsolved crimes.  NYPD Chief of Detectives has stated that Govan "might be a serial killer."

Govan lived near both of his suspected victims, Thomas and Brazell, on Gates Avenue in Brooklyn.  According to prosecutors, Govan stated during an interview that he was a "Jehovah's Witness" and that Brazell was "an abomination" because he was "gay."   Perhaps the true motive for Brazell's murder was a hate crime.

Govan was described as "violent toward people in his neighborhood... drawing a gun on at least two occasions on those who lived around him."  "He liked to have this power over people and have people afraid of him," someone told the New York Times.

Kwauhuru Govan has ties to New York, California and Florida.  He has a long criminal history involving "robbery, assault, burglary and weapons possession."
